Okay, so today I wanted to build a little something for my backyard volleyball court. I’ve been wanting to add some cushioned flooring to the area where we set up the net, just to make it a bit easier on the knees and joints, you know?

Getting Started

First, I measured the area I wanted to cover. I figured a rectangular section would be best, and after a bit of back and forth, I decided on the size.

Next, I went and got my materials. I needed:

  • Plywood sheets (enough to cover the area)
  • Cushioning material (I went with those interlocking foam tiles, seemed easy enough)
  • Some heavy-duty wood screws
  • Outdoor adhesive (gotta keep those cushions in place!)

Putting It Together

The first thing I did was lay down the plywood. It was kind of a pain to get it all lined up correctly, but it worked, and was the main frame for the entire thing!

Then, I spread the adhesive on top of the plywood. I made sure to get a good, even coat so the foam tiles would stick properly. Gotta be generous with that stuff.

Next up, I started placing the foam tiles. These things interlock, so that part was pretty satisfying, just clicking them together like giant puzzle pieces. I made sure to press down firmly on each tile to really get it stuck to the adhesive.

After I covered the whole plywood area with the foam, I decided to add a little extra security. I grabbed my drill and added some wood screws around the edges of the plywood, just to make extra sure everything was nice and secure, and wouldn’t go, moving at all.

Finished!

And that’s pretty much it! It wasn’t a super complicated project, but it definitely makes a difference. Now we’ve got a bit of cushion when we’re playing, which is great. My knees are already thanking me! I can jump and play easily now.
