So, I had this crazy idea. I wanted a dance floor. Not just any dance floor, mind you. I wanted something I could move around, something…springy. And wooden. Don’t ask me why, it just felt right. Thus began my adventure with what I now affectionately call the “keel dancing rubber tree portable wooden flooring” project.

First, I messed around with figuring out the base. I knew I wanted something that could take a beating, you know, from all the…enthusiastic…dancing. I thought about a standard subfloor but decided it too boring.

I went with keel,it’s strong for support structure.I got some strong wood and cut the keel.

The Bouncy Part

This is where the “rubber tree” part comes in. I didn’t actually use a rubber tree, obviously. I needed something to give the floor some bounce, some give. Regular wood on the floor is stiff, and I didn’t wanted.

• I spent a good chunk of time at the hardware store, just…feeling things. Seriously, I was that weirdo squeezing rubber blocks and bouncing on sample mats.
• Finally, settled on these thick, dense rubber pads. They’re the kind used for heavy machinery, I think, to absorb vibrations. Perfect!

I attached the rubber pads to the underside of the keel, spacing them out evenly. Lots of screws. Lots. My hands were cramping, but I was determined.

The Pretty Part (and the Portable Part)

Now for the wood.I got some wooden boards.I love the look, okay? And it had to be portable. So, no giant, single sheets of plywood for me.

I cut the wooden boards and put them together on top of * It is done.

The whole thing took me longer than I expected, and there were definitely some moments of frustration. But seeing it all come together, and actually dancing on it, made it all worthwhile. It’s a little rough around the edges, but it’s mine, and it’s got character. And bounce. Lots of bounce.
