Okay, folks, let’s dive into my little project of putting together a portable basketball court floor. I’ve always wanted a decent surface to practice on, and finally, I decided to just do it.

First things first, I gathered all my materials. I’m no carpenter, but I figured I could handle this. I went with some interlocking wooden panels – the kind that snaps together. I also got a bunch of those foam underlayment rolls to put underneath for some cushioning. It’s supposed to help with shock absorption and make the floor a little less brutal on the knees, you know?

The Prep Work

Before laying anything down, I made sure the area I was working with was super clean. I’m using my garage, so I swept the heck out of it and even used a leaf blower to get rid of any tiny debris. I wanted a perfectly flat surface, no little pebbles messing things up.

Then I start rolling out the underlayment. That was pretty easy, just unroll and tape the seams together. It’s kind of like putting down a giant puzzle, only less frustrating because the pieces are huge.

Laying Down the Floor

Now for the main event. I started with one corner of the garage and began snapping those wooden panels together. It’s actually pretty satisfying hearing that “click” sound, knowing it’s all locking into place. I worked my way across the floor, row by row, making sure everything was tight and aligned. There were a few spots where I had to get a rubber mallet and give the panels a little encouragement to fully connect, but nothing major.

  • Grab Panels
  • Align the interlocking edges
  • Push together until click
  • Repeat until the garage is full.

Almost Done!

The toughest part was probably cutting some of the panels to fit along the edges of the garage. My garage isn’t a perfect rectangle, so I had to do some measuring and use a jigsaw to trim a few pieces. Honestly, that was a bit nerve-wracking because I didn’t want to mess up and waste any of the panels. But, I took my time, and it turned out okay.

Final Touches

After all the panels were down, I went around the perimeter and added some transition strips. These are just little ramps that smooth out the edge of the floor so you don’t trip when you’re walking on and off. It’s a small detail, but it makes the whole thing look more finished. The portable part is so good because I can move or change the floor anytime.

And that’s it! I’ve got my own little basketball court. It’s not NBA-regulation size, but it’s perfect for practicing my shots. It’s not the prettiest thing in the world, but it’s functional, and I did it myself, which is pretty cool. Now, time to shoot some hoops!
