Okay, so I wanted to get into this whole “rubber dancing” thing, and I needed a floor. But I also wanted it to be, like, portable, you know? Something I could move around, not just stuck in one place. And I’m a sucker for that nice, warm look of wood. So, I decided to build my own hard portable wooden flooring. Let me tell you, it was a journey!

Getting Started

First, I had to figure out what kind of wood I wanted. I went to the local hardware store and just looked around, felt different pieces. I ended up choosing some interlocking hardwood floor panels. They looked pretty sturdy, and the interlocking part seemed like it would make things easier, make it more portable. I also grabbed some rubber underlayment, thinking that would be good for, uh, shock absorption. You know, for all the intense dancing.

Putting It Together

Honestly, this part was kinda like putting together a giant puzzle.

  • First, I measured the space that is my dedicated area of dancing, then cut the rubber underlayment to the size I wanted the floor to be. I just used some heavy-duty scissors. Easy peasy.
  • Then came the wooden panels. Thank goodness they interlocked! It was still a bit of a pain, getting them all lined up and snapped together, used a rubber hammer to gently give a little help to make them align perfectly. But once I got going, it went pretty smoothly.

My First Dance

I finally finished building the dance floor, and connected all the pieces together with screws and rubber connectors, I was tired, but excited! It was solid, it looked good, and it felt great under my feet. I put on some music and started moving. It worked! The floor felt solid and stable, and the rubber underneath gave it just enough give. I moved it from my living room to my spare bedroom, and then back to my yard!

I will say, it’s not exactly “lightweight.” Moving it around takes a bit of effort, but it’s definitely doable. And it’s so much better than being stuck with a floor in just one spot.

It’s not perfect, my cuts could use some improvement, but it’s mine, I built it, and it works for my crazy dancing. And I’m sharing my tips and tricks so that you can make yours! What do you think of my creation?
