So, I got this itch recently. You know how it is, you see something or remember something, and suddenly you gotta do it? For me, it was setting up a quick spot for some volleyball. Not like, a pro court, just something fun and easy in the yard or maybe the garage if the weather turned bad. The key thing was portable. Something I could put down and pick up without a massive hassle.

Finding the Floor

First thing I tackled was the floor. Concrete’s too hard, grass is uneven. I started digging around online and found those portable wooden flooring tiles. The kind that sort of click together like puzzle pieces. Seemed perfect. They looked decent, and the idea was I could just lay them out when needed. So, I bit the bullet and ordered a stack of ’em. Enough to make a small playing area.

They arrived in a few big boxes. Heavier than I thought, honestly. Spent a good Saturday afternoon lugging them out back and figuring out the pattern. It was pretty straightforward, mostly just lining them up and stepping on them to get that satisfying click. Took a couple of hours, maybe sweated a bit more than expected. But hey, ended up with a nice little wooden patch right there on the lawn. Looked kinda neat.

The Ball and That Rubber Tree Thing

Alright, floor’s down. Now for the main event: the volleyball itself. I specifically wanted a rubber volleyball. Don’t know why, just always preferred the feel of rubber ones. Maybe they remind me of school days, or perhaps I figured they’d hold up better outdoors on this wooden thing I just built. Went to a couple of sports shops.

Funny thing happened while I was looking for the ball. Holding a rubber ball, I started thinking, where does this stuff actually come from? Like, really come from? I mean, you hear “rubber” all the time, but it’s weird when you stop and think about it. It got me thinking about rubber trees. I remembered seeing pictures or maybe a documentary once, guys cutting the bark, white stuff dripping out. It’s kinda wild that we get bouncy balls and tires from tree sap. I even have one of those little houseplants people call rubber plants – totally different thing, I know, but it made me chuckle. Just a weird little rabbit hole my brain went down while standing in the middle of aisle five. It’s strange how materials we use every day have these whole origin stories we never consider. Anyway, I found a decent rubber ball eventually and got back on track.

Putting it all Together

So, I had the portable wooden flooring laid out, and I had my rubber volleyball. Time for the moment of truth. Went out, bounced the ball on the new surface. The sound was okay, a solid thump. The bounce felt pretty good, actually. Not too dead, not crazy bouncy like concrete. Played around a bit, just bumping it to myself.

  • Floor setup: Done.
  • Ball acquired: Done.
  • Initial test: Passed.

It felt pretty successful. The wooden tiles stayed put, the ball handled well on them. Cleanup was easy too, just unclicked the tiles, stacked ’em up, and put them away. Took maybe 20 minutes. Exactly what I wanted – a quick, temporary setup.

So yeah, that was my little project. From getting the idea, to laying down that portable wooden flooring, finding the right rubber volleyball, and even having a weird moment thinking about rubber trees. It worked out pretty well. A simple thing, but satisfying to figure it out and make it happen.
