Okay, here’s my blog post about the “cushions dancing soft maple timber” project, written in a casual, personal style:

So, I had this idea, right? I wanted to combine the comfy feel of cushions with the warm look of maple wood. I don’t know, it just sounded cool in my head – “cushions dancing” on a smooth, light-colored wood surface. It was all very artsy-fartsy in my imagination.

Getting Started

First, I got my hands on some maple. Luckily, I found some scrap pieces from a local furniture maker. They were already cut into nice, rectangular shapes, which saved me a ton of work. Score!

Next up, the cushions. I didn’t want anything too bulky, you know? More like thin, elegant pads. I went with some simple, off-white linen fabric and some soft batting for the filling. I’m no sewing expert, but I managed to stitch together some basic square shapes. They weren’t perfect, but hey, that’s part of the charm, right?

Putting it all Together

Now for the fun part – making the cushions “dance”. I played around with a few ideas. At first, I thought about just placing the cushions on the wood, but that was… boring. Then, it hit me: I could create a kind of shallow recess in the wood, so the cushions would sit slightly below the surface. It’d be like they were nestled in.

Using a router (which I borrowed from my neighbor – thanks, Bob!), I carefully carved out some square-ish depressions in the maple planks. I went slow, checking the fit of the cushions as I went. It was a bit nerve-wracking, I’m not gonna lie. I didn’t want to mess up those beautiful wood pieces.

  • Maple planks acquired.
  • Cushions made. A bit wonky, but good enough!
  • Router borrowed.
  • Shallow recesses carved. Slowly and carefully!

The Finished Product

After some sanding and a coat of clear sealant on the wood (gotta protect it, right?), I popped the cushions into their little homes. And… wow! It actually looked pretty good! The soft white of the cushions against the light, smooth maple was exactly the vibe I was going for. It felt peaceful and modern, but also kind of playful, like the cushions were indeed, gently “dancing.”

It’s not perfect, of course. The cushions are a little lumpy in places, and the recesses aren’t perfectly uniform. But I’m really happy with how it turned out. It’s a unique piece, and it’s something I made. That’s the best part, really.

I set the wood with cushions that I made on my desk. Every time when I get tired, I always put my hands on it, and I have to say: “It is really really comfortable and soft. That make me feel great and released! ”

So, yeah, that was my little adventure with cushions, maple, and a borrowed router. Maybe it’ll inspire you to try something similar. Or not. Either way, thanks for reading!
